Portrait of Toby Godden

Beginnings

I’m Toby Godden, a writer and musician based in the Upper Swansea Valley. My work centres on fiction, sound, and small, practical arts projects.

My debut novella UniKin is complete — a contemporary mythic fantasy set in Hackney about systems, luck, and the hidden mechanics that hold a city together.

Alongside writing, I perform as Procrastinatrix, co-run Hedgetooth with Anthony “Tooth” Eves, and work with community arts spaces in and around Brecon.

Toby writing

Writing

I write fiction, scripts, and reflective pieces, usually grounded in contemporary behaviour, conversation, and the quiet strangeness of everyday life.

My completed novella UniKin follows Clay, Finch, and Tangent as they move through London’s institutional machinery and uncover the forces holding the city together. A full synopsis is available here: /unikin

I also have two additional completed manuscripts (Wardrobe and The Northern Line and Other Stories) and one in progress (The Bunker).

Earlier work

Triskabiblios (2005) — an alternate-reality project released under vibration13, designed to appear briefly and leave minimal trace.
Vibration13 Comix (2004–2007) — zine-style comics and early web fragments shared in small creative circles.

Bookshop space

Community & Film

I work at Literature Laboratory in Brecon, a children’s bookshop and arts space. My role includes workshops, events, family sessions, and keeping the space practical and welcoming.

I also run Ffilm.org, a small platform for local and community filmmaking, focused on simple tools, small crews, and projects that can be completed without large budgets.

Both strands stay close to real rooms, real people, and practical creative work.

Procrastinatrix live setup

Procrastinatrix

Procrastinatrix is my long-running electronic music project. Over the years I've built a large archive of tracks by working in short, focused bursts whenever time and energy line up.

The live setup is intentionally lean: Ableton, a small controller set, and a direct PA feed. Sets are improvised within clear boundaries so each night can move differently without losing shape.

I play regularly at EMOM nights across South Wales and collaborate with artists including Coppé Sweetrice and Taran Burns (transmitstatim). Our track “Chewing Gum Sculpture” was played on BBC Radio Wales.

Releases go out through Not the Final Vinyl Ltd.

Hedgetooth live

Hedgetooth

Hedgetooth is a duo with Anthony “Tooth” Eves. Tooth plays live drums; I handle processing and arrangement. Everything is shaped live with no backing tracks — enough structure to hold the night together, and enough looseness to let it change.

Our debut album “Gotta Start Somewhere” is out through Not the Final Vinyl, and has been featured on BBC Radio Wales (Adam Walton). We continue to refine the format through regular live shows.
