Portrait of Toby Godden

Beginnings

I’m Toby Godden, a writer and musician based in the Upper Swansea Valley. My work spans long-form writing, electronic music, and small, practical arts projects.

I perform and release as Procrastinatrix, co-run the duo Hedgetooth with Anthony “Tooth” Eves, and work with community spaces in and around Brecon.

Toby writing and planning

Writing

I write fiction, scripts, and reflective pieces. The work tends to stay close to contemporary life: technology, behaviour, and the way people actually talk to each other.

Some pieces become finished stories or texts for performance; others sit in draft while I circle back to them. I’m more interested in durable work than fast turnaround.

Earlier work

Triskabiblios (2005) — a small alternate-reality project released under vibration13, built to appear briefly and leave minimal trace.
Vibration13 Comix (2004–2007) — zine-style comics and early web fragments shared in small creative circles.

Bookshop and community space

Community & Film

I work at Literature Laboratory in Brecon, a children’s bookshop and small arts space. My role includes helping run workshops, events, and family sessions, and keeping the space useful to the people who use it most.

I also run Ffilm.org, an early-stage platform for local and community filmmaking. The focus is on straightforward, small-scale production: simple crews, accessible tools, and projects that can be built and finished without huge budgets.

Both strands are practical and local: real rooms, real people, and work that can be done with what’s already to hand.

Procrastinatrix live setup

Procrastinatrix

Procrastinatrix is my long-running electronic music project. Over the years I’ve built a large archive of tracks — from rough sketches to finished pieces — by working in short, focused bursts whenever time and energy line up.

The live setup is intentionally lean: Ableton, a small group of controllers, and a direct connection into the PA. Sets are improvised within tight boundaries, so each night can move differently without losing shape.

I play regularly at EMOM nights around South Wales and collaborate with other artists, including Coppé Sweetrice and Taran Burns (transmitstatim). Our track “Chewing Gum Sculpture” has been played on BBC Radio Wales.

Releases go out through Not the Final Vinyl Ltd, which handles distribution and the occasional physical edition.

Hedgetooth live

Hedgetooth

Hedgetooth is a duo with Anthony “Tooth” Eves. Tooth plays live drums; I handle processing and arrangement. We use loops, but everything is built and moved around live.

The aim is simple: keep just enough structure to hold the set together and just enough risk to let the night decide where it goes. No backing tracks, no safety net.

Our debut album “Gotta Start Somewhere” is out through Not the Final Vinyl, and the project will be featured on BBC Radio Wales (Adam Walton). We have further gigs booked and are treating each show as a way to stress-test and refine the format.
